Mary Lou McDonald welcomes the EU Council President’s commitment to the Good Friday Agreement
Following today’s meeting between An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and EU Council President Donald Tusk, Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald TD welcomed Mr Tusk’s commitment to the Good Friday Agreement:
Deputy McDonald said:
“Donald Tusk today reiterated the European Union Council’s commitment to the Good Friday agreement, and the need to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland.
“He also made it very clear that resolving the issue of the impact of Brexit on Ireland was central to any proceeding with any further deal between the EU and Britain, post Brexit.
“We believe that the way forward is for the North to have designated special status within the EU.
“This would safeguard our economy, our agreements - and give effect to the democratic will of the people to remain.
“We have brought forward workable solutions to Brexit, as have The EU, but we have yet to hear workable solutions from the British Government to their mess.
“The clocking is ticking on the negotiations. It is well past a time for them to end the posturing and deal with the issues by bringing forward workable solutions.”
