Taoiseach must meet parties to discuss foreign policy shift announced in Brussels – Sean Crowe TD

23 March, 2018 - by Seán Crowe TD

Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Seán Crowe TD, has called on the Taoiseach to meet with political parties to detail the information he has received which has led him to announce a review of the Russian Embassy in Dublin and to possibly expel some Embassy staff.

Deputy Seán Crowe said:

“I was surprised to hear a major shift in the Irish Government’s position today and that the Government is examining whether to expel Russian diplomats from Ireland. This is a significant step and we need to see the evidence underpinning his decision.

“On Wednesday there was a Dáil debate on this European Council meeting and the Taoiseach never mentioned anything about a review of the Russian Embassy’s work in Dublin. Yet he freely announces it to reporters in Brussels today.

“This change in Irish foreign policy seems to be based on information from a foreign security intelligence service, which is an unprecedented dangerous path.

“The Taoiseach needs to meet with the representatives of political parties when he returns from Brussels and explain what has led to this shift in policy.”
