More needs to be done to tackle ocean pollution - Boylan

23 March, 2018 - by Cathal Boylan

Sinn Fein Spokesperson on Energy, the Environment and Climate Change, Newry and Armagh MLA Cathal Boylan has called for more to be done to tackle plastic seeping into the world’s oceans, after a major report warned that the amount of plastic in the ocean is set to treble by 2025.

The Newry and Armagh MLA commented:

“Every year thousands of tonnes of plastic is being dumped into our oceans.

“This plastic devastates the local marine wildlife, pollutes our oceans and has the potential to negatively affect our health.

“I am extremely worried about this the findings of this report, alongside the announcement that the amount of plastic floating in the pacific ocean is up to sixteen times larger than originally estimated.

“It is time that we get serious about fighting against ocean pollution and take effective steps to protect its fragile biodiversity.

“We need to move away from single use and short life span plastics and ensure that any plastic used is recycled or disposed of in the most environmentally friendly way."
