Be part of building a new Ireland

Taoiseach’s ‘bizarre outburst’ is a knee-jerk reaction to the measured comments of Minister Jim Daly - Mary Lou McDonald TD

12 April, 2018 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Responding to comments about Sinn Féin from An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar today, Sinn Féin Leader Mary Lou McDonald TD has said;

“It is quite obvious that Leo Varadkar is reacting, in a knee-jerk manner, to the measured comments of Jim Daly. This is a bizarre outburst as the Taoiseach is well aware of Sinn Féin opposition to sectarianism and discrimination in all its forms and for fair taxation.

“He is also well aware of our position on Brexit and that we believe the future of all of  Ireland is within the EU.

“I would remind the Taoiseach that it is the people who decide who is in government and not Fine Gael.

“Sinn Féin in government that will tackle the housing crisis, will give working families security and will invest in the future.  Sinn Féin in government will deliver real change in politics and in the lives of citizens.

“The partnership between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil has had its chance and it has failed. It has left a generation without the hope of owning a home and struggling to make the rent.  It has led to increased trolley waits and hospital waiting lists, and no security to working families.

“It is time for real change. Sinn Féin will deliver in government and neither Leo Varadkar nor Micheal Martin can ignore the will of the people. And after an election we will respect the mandate of all parties negotiate with any and all of them to deliver a programme of government that delivers for all citizens.

“The attempts to exclude Sinn Féin and to dismiss our mandate lack any credibility and are an insult to the the hundreds of thousands of Sinn Féin voters across this island.”
