Theresa May must face reality of failing to address Irish Brexit concerns – McDonald

16 April, 2018 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Acknowledging the comments made by An Tánaiste Simon Coveney that the British government must bring forward workable solutions on the border issue by June or risk the entire Brexit withdrawal treaty, Sinn Féin Leader Mary Lou McDonald TD said;

“Theresa May must now face the reality of her refusal to address Irish Brexit concerns.

“The British government has had plenty of time deliver concrete proposals but they have failed.

“It is both a reasonable and necessary demand that they now do so by June and make it abundantly clear that they will honour the backstop arrangement to which they agreed in December.

“Essentially, this means that the North within the EU, including remaining in the Customs Union and the Single Market.

“These issues need to be resolved now, not put on the long finger. In the words of Donald Tusk, before negotiations continue ‘we must resolve Ireland first’. Minister Coveney and the Irish Government and EU must remain steadfast.

“Britain must live up to its responsibility of protecting the Good Friday Agreement and ensuring no hardening of the border.”
