Seán Crowe TD calls for Irish Government to protest against mass murder of Palestinians

14 May, 2018 - by Seán Crowe TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Foreign Affairs Seán Crowe TD has called on the Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney to strongly protest Israel’s mass murder of Palestinian civilians today in Gaza by expelling Israeli diplomats from Ireland.

Deputy Seán Crowe said:

“The brutality of the Israeli Army has once again been laid bare for the world to see. At least 41 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza today and more than 1,700 others wounded after the Israeli army fired live ammunition and tear gas at protesters who assembled to protest the US Government’s decision to relocate the US Embassy to Jerusalem.

“The demonstrations are also part of weeks-long commemorations for the 70th anniversary of the Nakba and protests calling for the right of return for Palestinian refugees to the areas they were forcibly expelled from in 1948.

“Since the protests began on 30 March, Israeli soldiers have killed at least 90 Palestinians in Gaza and wounded more than 9,400. Without International sanction or diplomatic retribution I fear that many more innocent civilians will be killed in the coming days.

“It is time for the Irish Government to give a strong and unambiguous statement that there can be no impunity for Israel’s mass killing of Palestinians citizens and its continued illegal occupation of Palestine.

“The Irish Government should move to expel the Israeli Ambassador in protest at these latest killings and act on the Oireachtas motion urgently that calls for Ireland to recognise the State of Palestine.”
