Body Cameras for Gardaí are in the interests of all – Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD
Sinn Féin spokesperson Justice & Equality Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD has called for all Gardaí to be provided with body cameras.
Teachta Ó Laoghaire said;
“I note this morning that the GRA have requested that all Gardaí are supplied with body cameras, and it is a request I wish to echo which I welcome, and I believe deserves serious consideration by Senior Garda Management and the Minister for Justice
“It makes perfect sense from the perspective of both Gardaí and the public, and ensures that both are protected and acting within the law.
“Gardaí in the past have been subjected to attacks which cannot be evidenced in court due to the lack of footage, and that simply isn’t good enough that given the technology available today that this simple protection measure is not afforded to them.
“While there may be issues regarding data protection, it would be possible to delete all non-evidential material will be deleted after a set time, perhaps 31 days, but this is a debate that needs to be had seriously.
“The work done by the rank-and-file members of An Garda Síochána on a daily basis is commendable, and they do the public a great service, and they need full support from their Senior Management in that task."
