‘Britain doesn’t care about Brexit chaos in Ireland’ - Ó Muilleoir

13 June, 2018 - by Máirtín Ó Muilleoir

Speaking after attending a roundtable with citizens from other EU countries, hosted by Stephen Farry MLA in Stormont, Máirtín O Muilleoir said:

“Ireland is collateral damage to a British Government which simply doesn’t care what chaos their Brexit agenda will cause here.

“The very fact that the British Government didn’t think the prospect of a hard border or the disastrous consequences of Brexit on the island of Ireland was even worth talking about during a six-hour debate on Brexit says everything about their attitude towards our needs,” Máirtín Ó Muilleoir commented.

“They have always seen Ireland as collateral damage in their Brexit agenda. They simply don’t care what chaos they will wreak on our communities and our industries, North and South.

“That is why it is so crucial that the Irish Government and the EU27 stand firm in defence of the interests of EU citizens and EU rights on the island of Ireland.

“We cannot withstand exclusion from the single market or customs union.

“We cannot have any diminution of the Good Friday Agreement and the EU backstop must be the bottom line in order to prevent a hard border and safeguard our political and economic stability now and for the future.

“We must defend all the rights, opportunities and benefits we now enjoy as EU citizens post-Brexit.”
