Barnier inclusion of Single Electricity Market as part of tests on Irish border welcome - Boylan
Speaking on today’s address by EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier at the Institute for International and European Affairs in Brussels, Sinn Féin energy spokesperson, Cathal Boylan said;
“Mr Barnier set out comprehensively the key tests which must be met on the border as part of any Withdrawal Agreement, as the British Cabinet meets at Chequers.
“I welcome the inclusion of a continued All-Island Single Electricity Market as one of the key tests he has set out.
“Energy security for our economy is of strategic national importance and the electricity sector is critical to this.
“The All-Island Single Electricity Market has been operating for 11 years creating a single market across the entire island which provides huge economic advantage and consumer benefit.
“Brexit poses a real threat to the Single Electricity Market, because both parts of this island operate jointly in this regard, so any threat to the existing arrangements functioning efficiently, is not acceptable and cannot be tolerated by the Irish Government.
“This issue is of such importance I believe that it should be high on the agenda of the forthcoming British-Irish Intergovernmental Conference which meets later this month given its relevance to both parts of the island of Ireland, and between Ireland and Britain.”
