“Two years on from Brexit we get three pages” - Mary Lou McDonald TD

7 July, 2018 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Speaking after the British Cabinet agreed a position on Brexit Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald TD said:

“Over two years on from the Brexit referendum the British Government appears to have agreed a three page document

“The document is presented as a response to issues that Leo Varadkar assured us had been resolved last December.

“We now need to see and study  the details of the British proposals.

“Any viable proposal must be workable and must bring legal certainty and clarity.

“Any proposal must be tested and evaluated against the British governments obligations to protect the entirety of the Good Friday Agreement, to no hardening of the border and to protecting the rights of citizens in the north of Ireland.

“The 'backstop' or Irish protocol agreed last December is the bottom line for Ireland. The British government cannot negotiate downwards from that position.

“The delaying tactic of the British must end and a viable, legally certain answer to the Irish question given.”
