Communities must shape new Belfast Local Development Plan – Ní Chuilín
Sinn Féin MLA Carál Ní Chuilín has said it is vital that communities in the city help to shape the new Local Development Plan in a consultation launched by Belfast Mayor Deirdre Hargey today at City Hall.
Carál Ní Chuilín said:
“The Local Development Plan 2020-2015 (LDP) will replace the Belfast Metropolitan Area Plan (BMAP) and will shape investment in Belfast and set out proposals on how the city should develop in the future.
“The LDP has recommendations on assessing planning applications and site specific proposals on the development and use of land in Belfast.
“This includes Urban Design, Social and Affordable Housing, Environment, Tourism and Leisure, Economy, Transport and Waste Infrastructure to name but a few examples.
“Consultation on the LDP will run until the 15th of November this year and I am calling on communities and sectors across the city to take part in the consultation and any subsequent public enquiries.
“Sinn Féin has concerns for example about ensuring that land will be used for housing to cater for the approximately 11,000 people currently living in housing stress.
“Affordability must be defined in any new housing policy, including the ability to buy a home and affordability in renting a home and we welcome a greater definition of developer contributions.
“We will be making the case that a full Equality Impact Assessment must be completed which takes into account proposals which must tackle systemic inequalities and deprivation.”
