Sinn Féin offer to address concerns of protestants in greater Shankill area
September 15, 2005
Sinn Féin West Belfast MLA Fra McCann has offered to meet with any residents, or facilitate meetings with interface and community workers to address any concerns that protestants may have in the Greater Shankill area after DUP councillor William Humphrey alleged sectarian attacks on protestant homes.
Mr McCann said:
"I would be very surprised if there has been any evidence at all of sectarian attacks carried out by republicans on protestant homes in Dunboyne Park, Springfield Road or Kirk Street given the very visible activities of loyalist paramilitaries in recent days.
"However, I would offer Cllr Humphrey the opportunity to stand alongside Sinn Féin against all sectarian attacks no matter where they emanate from.
"Cllr Humphrey would also benefit everyone across the communities by working to end the campaign of fear being spread by loyalists who even today are hijacking cars and intimidating people throughout the North and West of the city.
"I know that community and interface workers have been working all week to try and calm tensions in the area following the weekend of orchestrated loyalist violence.
"I would say to any protestant families concerned about any perceived threat from republicans that Sinn Fein can either facilitate meetings with community workers or indeed they can sit down with party representatives." ENDS
