Budget should include support for organic sector - Martin Kenny TD
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Agriculture, Food and Marine Martin Kenny TD is calling on Minister Creed to re-open the existing organic farmers’ scheme, or to introduce a new scheme to provide support so that more farmers will get involved in organics.
Deputy Kenny said:
“Organic farmers are being neglected. The government must introduce support measures in budget 2019 to ensure the sustainability of the sector and to encourage more people to get involved in organic growing.
“Organic production has developed over the last number of years and it is vital that these farmers are supported to ensure that this continues not just in horticulture but also in milk and meat.
“Irish organic produce is regarded as highest quality food on international markets and the sector has huge potential for expansion.
“The Organic Sector Strategy Group, set up in March this year, is due to have a draft strategy produced this month. I am calling on Minister Creed to act on this strategy and provide incentives for the organic sector in Budget 2019.
“This could be done by re-opening the Organic Scheme for new entrants or introducing a new support scheme for the sector.”
