English only Health Warnings for Fine Gael – Peadar Tóibín TD

27 September, 2018 - by Peadar Tóibín TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson for the Irish language, Peadar Tóibín TD, has said that English language only Government Health Warnings on alcohol drinks are further evidence of a government reducing the value and presence of the Irish language in society.

Deputy Tóibín said:

“Last night the government ruled out putting Irish on warning labels on alcoholic products – saying that it would serve to confuse the message being relayed.

“But Irish is already used on government health warnings on cigarettes, it hasn’t confused people or reduced the impact of the warnings. Why is Fine Gael in a constant state of visibility reduction when it comes to the Irish language?

“It’s not just that it is simply insulting to the tens of thousands of Irish speakers in the country, but it is a reduction in the status and visibility of the language.

"Status of a language is no mean thing when it comes to motivating people to use it. Under Fine Gael there has been a significant fall in the use of the Irish language in the Gaeltacht.

“Minister Harris boasts that this Bill is 'pioneering'. What would be truly pioneering if the Irish language were to be actually treated with due deference in accordance with the Constitution and chiming with the reality of many thousands of daily Irish speakers.

"While we are fully supportive of the need for alcohol warning labels, we believe that this can be done using both our official languages.”

Rabhadh sláinte i mBéarla amháin do Fhine Gael – Peadar Tóibín TD

Dúirt urlabhraí Gaeilge Shinn Féin, An Teachta Peadar Tóibín, go léiríonn an chinniúint rialtais le rabhadh sláinte i mBéarla amháin a úsáid ar dheochanna meisciúla, an laghdú ar luach agus láithreacht an Ghaeilge sa tsochaí faoina stiúir.

Dúirt an Teachta Tóibín:

“Aréir chuir an rialtas úsáid rabhadh sláinte i nGaeilge ar dheochanna meisciúla as an áireamh. Dúradar go gcuirfeadh sé mearbhall ar dhaoine maidir leis an teachtaireacht atá a chur trasna.

“Ach tá an Ghaeilge in úsáid cheana féin ar rabhadh sláinte rialtais ar thoitíní agus níl sé tar éis mearbhall a chur ar dhaoine, nó cur isteach ar éifeacht na comhartha rabhaidh. Cén fáth go bhfuil Fine Gael de shíoraí ag iarradh an Ghaeilge a chur i gceilt?

“Ní hamháin go bhfuil sé maslach dos na deicheanna míle cainteoirí Gaeilge sa tír, is laghdú ar stádas agus feiceálacht na teanga sa Stát é. Tá tábhacht ag baint stádas na teanga nuair atá iarrachtaí á dhéanamh agus daoine a spreagadh chun na húsáide. Tháinig laghdú suntasach ar úsáid na Gaeilge sa Ghaeltacht agus Fine Gael i gcumhacht.

“Bíonn an tAire Harris a mhaíomh go bhfuil an Bille seo “ceannródaíoch”. Rud a bheadh ceannródaíoch i ndáiríre ná dá dtugadh an rialtas meas mar is cuí don teanga de réir na Bunreachta  agus de réir na mílte cainteoirí Gaeilge laethúla. Cé go bhfuilimid ag tacú go hiomlán leis an riachtanas atá ann le rabhadh sláinte a bheith ar dheochanna meisciúla, creidimid go bhféadfaí é seo a bhaint amach sa dá theanga oifigiúil.”
