Ennis welcomes launch of 20x20 female sporting project

15 October, 2018 - by Sinéad Ennis

Sinn Féin MLA Sinéad Ennis has welcomed the launch of the 20x20 ‘if she can’t see it, she can’t be it’ initiative by Irish Sport.

This is an initiative that seeks to increase participation, attendance and media coverage in women’s sport by 20% by the year 2020.

The party’s Culture, Arts and Sport spokesperson said:

“The drive to achieve 20% more involvement, funding and coverage of women in sport in Ireland is encouraging and well over due to shift the cultural perspective of women’s sport in Ireland.

“The 20x20 initiative will promote and champion female athletes at sports at every level as women’s sport is equally important and this must be reflected in sponsorship and coverage.

“We have many successful and determined female athletes in Ireland and that must be given the chance to showcase their talent on the biggest platforms.

“The Irish women’s hockey team reached the world cup final for the first time in history this year, coupled with the ladies GAA all-Ireland finals being the highest attended women’s sporting event.

“We all have a duty to ensure that female athletes are given the platform to succeed when it comes to sporting activities.”
