Sinn Féin oppose cut to sports development grant

24 October, 2018 - by Sinéad Ennis

Sinn Féin MLA Sinéad Ennis said proposed cuts to the Sports Development Grant is a direct result of relentless Tory/DUP austerity.

The party’s Culture, Arts and Sport spokesperson was commenting after the Department of Education confirmed funding for the grant would not continue after October 2018.

Sinéad Ennis said:

“Sinn Féin is vigorously opposed to the cutting of the Sports Development Grant.

“Cutting the Sports Development Grant would have a direct impact on the employment GAA and IFA coaches through the Curriculum Sports Programme.

“This is the most recent victim of the Tory austerity agenda aided and abetted by the DUP with school children bearing the brunt.

“The budget for everyday spending on public services has been slashed by £1 billion in real terms since 2010 and unless there is an end to the current austerity policies being forced on people here by the Tory/DUP pact, front line public services will continue to be damaged.

“This cut must be reversed immediately. Sinn Féin will continue to rigorously oppose these assault on public services and the most vulnerable in society.”
