‘Children’s rights must be protected’ - Kelly

20 November, 2018 - by Catherine Kelly

Sinn Féin MLA Catherine Kelly has said it’s crucial that children’s rights and the Good Friday Agreement are protected in the future.

Speaking on Universal Children’s Day, the party’s spokesperson for Children and Young People commented:

“Universal Children’s Day marks the anniversary of the dates when the UN General Assembly adopted both the declaration and convention of children’s rights.

“The convention sets out a number of children’s rights such as the right to be protected from violence and discrimination.

“The reckless Brexit agenda being pursued by the DUP and Tory Brexiteers threatens children’s opportunities and seeks to create barriers and division.

“As the Brexit debacle continues and moves near crunch time, it’s vital that the Good Friday Agreement and children’s rights are protected.

“Every child deserves a future, a healthy start in life, the opportunity to learn and to be protected from harm.

“I am encouraging people to wear blue today and support out collective goal to improve children’s welfare worldwide, promote and celebrate children’s rights and promote togetherness and awareness amongst all children.”
