'Slow down on the roads' - McGuigan

20 November, 2018 - by Philip McGuigan

Sinn Féin MLA Philip McGuigan has urged motorists to slow down in order to reduce the 'horrifying reality' of deaths on our roads.

The party’s Infrastructure spokesperson was commenting after a meeting with the Department for Infrastructure today, during Road safety week.

Philip McGuigan said:

"Five years ago the budget for road safety initiatives was £3 million. This year it is £700k and another casualty of Tory austerity policies.

“Over 50 people have unfortunately died on our roads this year.

"This isn’t just a statistic but a horrifying reality for families having to come to terms with the loss of loved ones and we must be working together with the PSNI and government departments to reduce this figure to zero.

"Speed is still the main cause of road collisions and I would urge everyone to slow down, not just during Road Safety week, but on every journey.

“There are other factors that are far too prevalent and today’s meeting was useful to talk over changes that are needed and that can help reduce drink related collisions as well as those caused by using mobiles whilst driving.”
