Anderson calls for Istanbul Convention to be ratified
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has called on all EU member states to ratify the Istanbul Convention on preventing violence against women and domestic violence.
Martina Anderson said:
"Violence against women is all too prevalent in every aspect of society and impacts on women of all ages.
"On Sunday we marked the international day of action against violence against women and it also marked 16 days of action on the issue.
"The Istanbul Convention aimed at preventing violence against women and domestic violence was launched in 2011 and came onto force in 2014 but to date not all of the EU member states have ratified it.
"Among those who have yet to ratify it are both the British government and Irish governments.
"Given that one in five women in Ireland will experience domestic or sexual violence during their lifetime it is vital that the the Irish government ratifies the Istanbul Treaty as a matter of urgency.
"Women's rights were hard won and we can't afford to have any regression. This Convention must be ratified in order to protect rights and protect women."
