Tesco must respect the rights of its workers - David Cullinane TD

3 December, 2018 - by David Cullinane TD

Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Workers’ Rights David Cullinane TD has extended his support for striking Tesco workers in Sligo & Carrick-On-Shannon, saying that Tesco must respect workers right to collective representation.

Deputy Cullinane said;

“The right to collective representation for workers is a basic standard that all businesses should respect.

“Sinn Féin send our full support to the striking Tesco workers. This is not the first time they have had to resort to industrial action, but it seems Tesco are set to continue with their anti-Union approach.

“Last year I introduced legislation to make this right real to workers, and yet Fianna Fáil & Fine Gael voted against it.

"I fail to see how allowing trade unions meet their members is a threat to anyone except bad employers.

“The Government needs to step up and support workers; it needs to act to ensure that trade union membership is protected and it needs to stand up to the corporations that are exploiting workers in this State.”
