Kelly welcomes appointment of independent members to Policing Board

4 December, 2018 - by Gerry Kelly

Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly has welcomed the appointment of three new independent members to the Policing Board but said that gender imbalance must be tackled as soon as possible.

Gerry Kelly said:

“I welcome the reconstitution of the Policing Board which will reinstate oversight and accountability on policing which has been missing for many months.

“I also welcome the appointment of the three, new independent members to the Board, bringing independent members back to the full complement of nine. I look forward to working with them and the other members over coming months.

“However, I am concerned the three female independent members who completed their tenure were replaced by three male appointees. A gender balance on the board can be maintained alongside the importance of skillsets.

:”This needs to be addressed as soon as possible and an opportunity will arise over coming months with the replacement of other independent members whose term in office will come to an end.”
