Gildernew challenges Trust on need for transparency over Muckamore

6 December, 2018 - by Colm Gildernew

Sinn Féin MLA Colm Gildernew has challenged the Belfast Trust to ensure families and transparency are central to its response to Muckamore Abbey abuse investigations.

Speaking after addressing a Board Meeting of the Belfast Trust, the party’s Carers spokesperson said:

“Sinn Féin has been supporting families and carers of the patients within Muckamore Abbey.

“It’s important that the Belfast Trust understands that the families and patients within Muckamore Abbey must be the priority.

“There is a need for the Belfast Trust to be transparent and open in addressing the serious issues around Muckamore Abbey. This is a long process but clearly much needs to be done to restore confidence in the families and in the public that patients are receiving the care they are entitled to expect.

“I made it clear that families must receive a full copy of the Serious Adverse Incident report and receive the necessary support to find out exactly was going on at Muckamore Abbey. They deserve nothing less.

“Sinn Féin will be meeting again with the regulator RQIA to raise issues about the effectiveness of the SAI process and its role in inspecting Muckamore Abbey.”
