Continued delays to legacy funding in stark contrast to additional Brexit money – Kelly

19 December, 2018 - by Gerry Kelly

Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly has said continued delays by the British Treasury to provide funding for legacy inquests in the north were unacceptable and in stark contrast to money made available for policing Brexit.

Gerry Kelly was speaking after the British Treasury announced it would be providing £16 million additional funding to the PSNI to deal with the policing implications of Brexit.

Gerry Kelly said:

“The British Treasury has no problem in making funding available for policing a Brexit rejected by the majority of the people in the north.

“This action is in stark contrast to the continued delays by the British government in releasing the funds requested by the Lord Chief Justice for legacy inquests.

“Families have already been waiting far too long for answers, some of them almost half a century.

“That is unacceptable and I am calling on the British government to immediately release the funding to the Lord Chief Justice so he can clear the backlog of inquests.”
