Sinn Féin is organising a Belfast-wide community consultation event titled 'Making Rights Real in a New Ireland' on Wednesday June 14th, at 10.30am, in Clifton House, North Queen Street, Belfast.
The Conference intends to discuss Sinn Fein's draft
"Rights for All" discussion document, as well as updating interest groups
from across Belfast on the prospect of a Roundtable Forum on the north's
Bill of Rights getting underway in the Autumn period.
Mayor of Belfast and South Belfast MLA, Alex Maskey will address the
conference alongside, South Down Sinn Fein MLA Catriona Ruane and North
Belfast MLA Kathy Stanton.
Commenting on the event, Kathy Stanton
"The vision of an Ireland that is at peace with itself
and with our nearest neighbours in Britain is a shared aspiration for most
of the people of Ireland.
"There are many different expressions
of that ideal and decisions on the constitutional, political, social and
economic future of the island of Ireland can only be arrived at through the
most thorough and inclusive dialogue, political discourse and negotiation by
the people of Ireland.
"The 'Rights For All' document is a
contribution to that discussion. This draft paper sets out ideas that Sinn
Féin believes to be essential human rights that should be constitutionally
enshrined in an Ireland of the future.
"The Rights as outlined
are not set in stone, but are drawn up as a basis for consultation with the
people of this island. Sinn Féin believes that all of civic society should
engage in this discussion to frame the New Ireland that will emerge and to
that end we aim to conduct as wide a consultation as possible."ENDS
