Unionist Silence On Attacks

29 July, 2003

South Belfast Sinn Féin Councillor Alex Maskey has accused the political leadership of unionism of 'again running away from the issue of loyalist attacks on Catholics'.

Cllr. Maskey said:

"In recent weeks we have witnessed a new wave of attacks against catholics across the north. In Antrim, Lisburn, Dunmurry, Magherafelt and elsewhere catholics have been attacked and in some cases forced from their homes.

"In response to this we have heard no commentary from David Trimble, Reg Empey, Jeffery Donaldson or any other senior unionist politician. The silence from the Direct Rule Ministers is equally deafening.

" It seems that there is a acceptance of a certain level of violence being directed against the catholic population. This has to end. The unionist political leadership has a role in preventing attacks on the catholic community. Their silence must end as a first step towards tackling this issue." ENDS
