Ferris welcomes Brazilian beef ban

30 January, 2008 - by Martin Ferris TD

The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Agriculture, Martin Ferris TD, has welcomed the decision by the EU to impose a temporary ban on the importation of beef from Brazil. Deputy Ferris was responding to the announcement this afternoon by Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou that imports would not be permitted because of concerns over the origin of the beef submitted by the Brazilian authorities.

Deputy Ferris said, "This decision is a vindication of those who have been calling for a ban on imports which clearly do not measure up to the standards expected of EU producers. In particular it endorses the campaign by Irish farmers based on the findings of a survey into the conditions pertaining within the Brazilian beef sector." ENDS
