Over 60s urged to apply for free travel on public transport over summer months - McGill‏

10 June, 2008

Sinn Féin West Tyrone MLA Claire Mc Gill is encouraging everyone over 60 to ensure that they secure their entitlement to free travel on public transport, which is scheduled to be introduced as and from October, by applying for their free travel Smartpasses over the summer months.

Claire Mc Gill said,

"The lowering of the eligibility criteria for free travel on public transport from 65 to 60 years is a welcome step in addressing social exclusion and isolation that many people in this age group have to contend with and I welcome DRD Minister Conor Murphy's commitment to the introduction of this measure by securing the necessary funding in the Budget.

"I would therefore encourage everyone over sixty to ensure that they secure their entitlement to free travel on public transport, which is scheduled to be introduced as and from October, by applying for their free travel passes over the summer months.

"Application forms will be available from all local Translink bus or railway stations this month and during July and August completed forms , along with the necessary supporting documentation, can be submitted to these same locations so that the application for your Smartpass can be processed in good time for the introduction of the scheme in October.
