Women’s Groups to protest over funding uncertainty

23 June, 2008

Sinn Féin spokesperson for Women Jennifer McCann MLA will join with protesters at Stormont today to raise her concern about the lack of funding for women's organisations involved in delivering Training and Education and other frontline services for women.

Women from a range of organisations operating in the Community and Voluntary sector, including those providing education and training will be on the steps of Stormont today.

She said,

"Women's groups and organisations have been at the forefront of delivering education and training, along with other essential frontline services to women in the community for decades.

"Up to 52 of those providers will be forced to close if European Social Fund (ESF) match funding cannot be found and Peace 3 monies are not secured.

"This will leave a huge gap in service provision and I am appealing to the Minister of Education & Learning Reg Empey to move urgently to prevent these much needed services to close.

"I am also asking the Minister of Finance & Personnel to ensure that Peace III monies will be distributed as a matter of urgency to the organisations that need them and that any gaps in funding will be addressed." ENDS
