Ferris: Government needs to protect pig sector jobs

8 December, 2008 - by Martin Ferris TD

Speaking in reaction to the withdrawal of pig meat from retail outlets the Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Agriculture Martin Ferris TD has said that the priority now must be to ensure that the sector is not damaged in such a manner as to threaten the many farm livelihoods and jobs that are dependent upon it.

Deputy Ferris said: "While there are questions regarding the source of the contamination and safeguards, these must await resolution in the future. The priority now must be to ensure that the sector is able to begin immediately to replace the withdrawn product particularly in the run up to Christmas.

"It is also vital given the measures taken in other countries that the Government mounts a diplomatic effort to assure overseas customers that the issue has been adequately dealt with and that no threat is presented by pig meat produced and exported from Ireland." ENDS
