South Down Ógra Shinn Féin to hold Gaza solidarity event

9 January, 2009

South Down Ógra Shinn Féin will be holding a candle light vigil on Newcastle's Main Street to highlight the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza resulting from Israel's bombardment and invasion of that part of Palestine.

Ógra's spokesperson in Newcastle, Fra Cochrane, said: "this will be a dignified event to show our solidarity with the beleaguered people of Gaza. With an ever mounting death toll, especially amongst women and children, what is happening in Gaza is nothing short of scandalous and must be challenged by all right thinking people.

"Sinn Féin is calling for an immediate end to attacks on all civilians; we are calling for a ceasefire and for urgent aid to be allowed into Gaza.

"This is an international humanitarian crisis and we hope that this small act of solidarity makes clear our revulsion and anger at what is happening in the Middle East and I would urge people to take part in the protest that will commence outside Pound Stretchers on Newcastle's Main Street at 8.30pm."
