Government must tackle high earners in public sector – Morgan

4 December, 2009

Responding to the collapse of the public sector pay talks this evening Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Arthur Morgan has the Government needs to tackle the high earners in the public sector and cross the board pay cuts are not the way forward.

Deputy Morgan said:

“Cross the board cuts to pay in the public sector are not the way forward as they fail to take account of the different pay levels.

“We must remember that the majority of public sector workers are on modest incomes and cannot afford a pay cut.

“Sinn Féin has showed clearly how the budget deficit can be made up without targeting low and middle income earners. We have shown how the public sector pay bill can be cut by capping the pay of the highest earners at €100,000.

“If the Government showed a willingness to tackle the high earners within the public sector there would be no need for unfair cross the board cuts.” ENDS
