Mary Lou McDonald TD

Mary Lou is Sinn Féin’s Deputy Leader, an elected member of the party’s Ard Chomhairle and was elected as a Sinn Féin TD for Dublin Central in February 2011.

Mary Lou is married to Martin and they have two  young children, Iseult and Gerard.  She has a reputation for hard work, through her local constituency office and being part of important local campaigns – Save Cabra Services, DART underground, defending local services like the Sean McDermott Street pool and fighting for local jobs.  She also has the experience to take on the powerful vested interests who almost destroyed this country.  She led the campaign against the Lisbon Treaty, represented the people of Dublin in the European Parliament and was part of Sinn Féin’s negotiating team in the peace process.

She was an MEP for Dublin from 2004 to 2009 and during her time in the European Parliament Mary Lou was a prominent member of the Employment and Social Affairs committee and Civil Liberties committee.  Educated in Trinity College, Dublin, the University of Limerick and Dublin City University she studied English Literature, European Integration Studies and Human Resource Management.  She previously worked as a consultant for the Irish Productivity Centre, a researcher for the Institute of European Affairs and a trainer in the trade union sponsored Partnership Unit of the Educational and Training Services Trust.

Speaking at her selection convention Mary Lou said “I am involved in politics because I believe that it is possible for each and every one of us to make a difference, to bring about change, to make our country a great place to live, work and grow old . I am asking you to give me a chance.  I will work with honesty and integrity in the interests of the people of this area and for our country.
