Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún called on the governments and on fellow MEPs to reject the proposed amendment to the Lisbon Treaty saying it will lead to "the imposition of further austerity measures".
Speaking in advance of the European summit this week, Ms de Brún said:
"The proposed treaty amendment is less to do with economic governance than with the imposition of further austerity measures.
"It is fully in line with the EU/IMF package which Ireland is suffering. It tries to make ordinary people pay for the failings of the banks and does nothing to bring about growth and employment. I am in favour of improving accountability and transparency in our economic governance but cannot support this treaty change.
"It puts further downward pressures on pay, pensions, public services and unemployment benefit, as John Monks, President of the European Trade Union Confederation has said in a letter to MEPs.
"I appeal to my fellow MEPs to vote against this amendment on Wednesday and I appeal to the governments to reject it at the European Council meeting on Thursday." ENDS
