Brian Stanley TD Welcomes Vote to Abandon Poolbeg Incinerator

4 March, 2014 - by Brian Stanley TD

Brian Stanley TD, Sinn Féin Spokesperson on the Environment has welcomed last night’s decision by Dublin City Council to abandon plans to build a waste incinerator at Poolbeg. He also called on the City Manager Eoin Keegan to withdraw what Deputy Stanley claims is a spurious threat that scrapping the plan will cost €150 million.

Deputy Stanley said:

“I am sure that residents of Dublin will welcome this decision. The failed project has already cost €100 million since it was first proposed in 1997. Now the City Manager is claiming that it will cost a further €150 million on the basis of some spurious ‘letter of comfort’ that no-one has seen. He must withdraw that threat.

“Sinn Féin has argued from the outset that not only is an incinerator a threat to people’s health, but that it is unnecessary on the basis that it should be possible to move towards a ‘zero waste’ position.”
