Fianna Fáil ‘Budget proposals’ for addressing the Health Crisis ‘Pathetic’ – O’Reilly

6 October, 2017 - by Louise O'Reilly TD

Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson Louise O’Reilly TD has said that Fianna Fáil should be embarrassed by what they have put forward as ‘Budget proposals’.

Deputy O’Reilly said:

“Despite Fianna Fáil stating in their ‘Budget proposals’ that the area of health is a priority for them, they fail to explore even a single proposal, costed or otherwise, of how to address the crisis which affects the sector.

“What constitutes a proposal for the area of health in this document is as follows: ‘In healthcare, we need more investment in acute beds and stepdown facilities’.

“The whole country knows that we need more investment in acute beds and stepdown facilities. What we need to know is how this will be done.

“In Sinn Féin’s Alternative Budget, costed by the Department of Finance, we have elaborated and explained exactly how this could be done. We outline how we can open 500 and staff acute hospital beds which were closed since the financial crisis years at a cost of €153 million.

“We also outlined how you could invest in older people and ensure they could stay in their own homes and live with dignity and respect with an investment of €50.3 million resulting in over 2 million more home help hours and an investment of €22.35 million providing nearly 2,500 more home care packages.

“Quite frankly, the Fianna Fáil document is embarrassing and I don’t know how Fianna Fáil as a party can stand over it; more so, I don’t know how their health spokesperson Deputy Billy Kelleher can stand over it either.

“When it comes to health, this rambling document is evidence that Fianna Fáil have no ideas of how to address this crisis which affects all of us.

“This document is the work of a party that have contempt for the general public and who treat health as a trivial matter.” ENDS
