Major Questions still unanswered on Department knowledge of McCabe Smear strategy - Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD
Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire has expressed his concern at the comments made by An Taoiseach in relation to any information the Department of Justice may have known in relation to undermining Garda McCabe's credibility.
Teachta Ó Laoghaire said;
"The Taoiseachs comments today have not answered the very serious questions raised in relation to what the Department knew in relation to undermining Garda McCabes credibility.
"He did not categorically say that the Department itself or it's officials had no prior knowledge.
"If the Department was aware of the approach that an Garda Síochána intended to take in the O’Higgins Commission, and allowed that to happen, or in any way supported it, then it is clear that the attempts to discredit Maurice McCabe go right to the Department. This is a deeply concerning prospect.
"That being the case, it is not an issue we can wait for an answer for. It goes right to the conduct and credibility of Department Officials.
"It is entirely within the gift of the Taoiseach to end this debate, and that is by saying, that the Department did not have anything whatsoever to do with that strategy.
"If he does not, then the Dáil must now consider an additional module for the Charleton Tribunal, relating specifically to the Department of Justice, it's Conduct and knowledge of these issues."
