Mountmellick flooding will happen again and elsewhere if action not taken urgently – Stanley

23 November, 2017 - by Brian Stanley TD

Speaking after visiting Mountmellick, Co Laois this morning, Sinn Féin TD and spokesperson for Climate Action Brian Stanley said that all resources must be provided to the town, and we need to ensure this does not happen again.

The Laois TD said:

“The effects of last night’s flooding in Mountmellick will be felt by people for a long time to come due to the significant damage these floods have caused to people’s homes.

“With the level of devastation suffered by many residents, the government needs to prioritise resources to help those in current need.

“In terms of the future, we need to put proper structures in place. The Barrow Drainage Board was abolished three years ago; they also managed the Owenass which runs through the town.  Alongside this, the long promised drainage scheme for the town has not happened. Such infrastructure is vital.”
