'Inquiry needed into Hillview controversy' - Sinn Féin

23 November, 2017 - by Carál Ní Chuilín

Sinn Féin is supporting calls for an independent inquiry into a controversial decision by some members of Belfast City Council's Planning Committee to create a retail-only development for the Hillview site in North Belfast.

The party’s Housing Spokesperson and North Belfast MLA Caral Ni Chuilin made the pledge as campaigners levelled a number of serious allegations regarding the controversy and warned of legal action against the council.

“From the beginning Sinn Féin has strongly opposed this decision so we welcome today’s intervention by the Participation and the Practice of Rights (PPR) Project to have it overturned and independently investigated,” she commented.
“The proposed development does absolutely nothing to address the varied and complex needs of this deprived North Belfast community including housing and  so many are rightfully aghast as to why it was approved.

“PPR have now made a number of very serious claims as to how this occurred and have called the Chief Executive of the Council to initiate an independent inquiry.

“Sinn Féin fully supports that call. These allegations need to be properly investigated and we will continue to work alongside campaigners, local residents, traders and other parties to ensure that happens.”
