Archibald welcomes funding for Stranmillis cyberbullying study

23 November, 2017 - by Caoimhe Archibald

Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald has welcomed the awarding of almost €300,000 for a study of cyberbullying in schools to Stranmillis University College in Belfast.

The party’s further and higher education spokesperson said:

“Stranmillis will be the lead researcher for the Blurred Lives project and will collaborate with universities in England, Italy, Holland and Germany over a two year period.

“The project aims to make recommendations to social media providers about how best they can prevent and tackle cyberbullying.

“While the funding is to be welcomed as it has the potential to improve the lives of young people in schools across Europe given that is coming from the EU’s programme for education and youth work the Erasmus+ scheme which is worth €14.7 billion (£12 billion) from 2014-2020 shows how vital remaining in Europe is to our university sector.

“The future of this funding is in doubt and shows that the implications of Brexit will have a damaging impact on the university and research sector.

"The only way to guard against the many detrimental impacts on this sector is to secure designated special status for the north within the EU and ensure continued free movement of people and access to all funding streams."
