Department of Justice Review must be entirely independent – Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD

28 November, 2017 - by Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD

Speaking on the Taoiseachs announcement today that a review into Department of Justice would take place and report back before Christmas, Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire said;

“The Department of Justice Review process must be entirely independent and should consider whether there was willful non-disclosure of relevant documents.

“The Taoiseach said the independent review would be carried out by the Taoiseachs own Secretary General, which to me is certainly not independent.

“Willful non-disclosure and a possibility of suppression of documents are no small matter, and may in fact have been illegal under the Commission of Investigation Act 2004.

“Indeed it is beyond belief, as is the statement from the Minister that he did not know whether the Charleton discovery order included the email accounts of Frances Fitzgerald and key officials in the department.

 “Whoever it is that carries out said review must be entirely independent, and in that vain should come from outside of the civil service.”
