Housing inequalities challenged by Sinn Féin

25 January, 2018 - by Carál Ní Chuilín

Sinn Féin Housing Spokesperson, Carál Ní Chuilín has led a delegation of MPs, MLAs and Councillors to meet with the Department of Communities and the Housing Executive in order to raise serious concerns regarding housing inequalities and the failure to provide housing services in key areas.

Speaking following the meeting Ms Ní Chuilín said:

“Sinn Féin has serious concerns over the direction of travel for the provision of social housing and housing services.

“There is an onus on both the Department of Communities and the Housing Executive to do much more in addressing housing inequalities and increasing the supply of housing.

“Sinn Féin pressed both agencies in terms of key areas including the vesting of land for social housing, on their acceptance that it is somehow inevitable families will grow up in hostels and that a large amount of public finance be used for rental in the private sector. Sinn Féin is extremely concerned that this amounts to the privatisation of statutory responsibilities to provide social housing.

“Further to this the role of the Housing Executive and the Department in protecting frontline services from the continuation of Tory cuts and austerity is essential.

“We received reassurances that the Supporting People Programme, which looks after vulnerable people, should be protected but no such assurances were given on protection for Neighbourhood Renewal schemes.

“Cutting front line services in deprived communities is unacceptable and these proposals should be reviewed as a matter of urgency.

“Sinn Féin left the Department and Housing Executive in no doubt that these issues, unless addressed, would face legal challenges for failing to implement Section 75 responsibilities and Sinn Féin will be supporting anyone bringing such challenges.”

Note:

Sinn Féin will be hosting a Housing Inequalities Conference at the Duncairn Arts Centre on Friday the 26th of January beginning at 10am.
