Sinn Féin backs call on Housing Executive to employ Carillion staff
Sinn Féin MLA Carál Ní Chuilín said today the Housing Executive should directly employ workers from the Carillion Energy Service following the collapse of the British construction giant.
The Sinn Féin housing spokesperson was speaking after Unite the union met the Housing Executive to discuss the plan.
Caral Ní Chuilín said:
“The collapse of Carillion has placed hundreds of workers in deep uncertainty about the future of their employment, and especially those employed under Housing Executive contracts with the firm.
“Heating and general maintenance for thousands of citizens and families in Housing Executive homes is provided through Carillion contracts.
“The protection of those employed through these contracts, and crucially the families living in homes dependent on this essential maintenance, must be the priority for the Housing Executive in the immediate future.
“Sinn Féin is backing a call by Unite for the Housing Executive to take workers from the Carillion Energy Service into direct employment.
“That call has been backed by Sinn Féin leader in the north Michelle O’Neill and supported on a cross-party basis.
“This is a sensible proposal which can bring some certainty to workers and tenants alike.”
