'Urgent review' needed into Irish Water handling of major leak in Tolka estate - Dessie Ellis TD

8 March, 2018 - by Dessie Ellis TD

Sinn Féin TD for Dublin North West, Dessie Ellis TD, has called for an urgent review of the way Irish water handles reports of leaks in the wake of a reported major leak in the Tolka estate which was reported to Irish water over six months ago.

Deputy Ellis said:

“We have a situation now in Dublin after Storm Emma where Irish Water has put in place a series of 12-hour service restrictions in the greater Dublin area to prevent widespread outages.

"My constituency office has been contacted by many people over the last number of days who were completely without any water.

"Yet we have a scandalous situation in the Tolka Estate where an individual has had to do a sit in at Irish water headquarters in order to fix a substantial leak outside his house.

"The leak was under a public pathway adjacent to the Water Meter, which Irish Water installed a few years ago.

"In August 2017 after a First Fix and Review by Irish water, it was determined that unbelievably there was 31,000 litres of water per day leaking from the pipe.

"The resident was requested to complete a waiver when the leak was discovered and in fact completed four waivers none of which was received by Irish water because it appears that Irish water have up to four different PO boxes one of which is in Cork.

"Since this leak was originally recorded by Irish Water last August, at least 600,000 litres of water has gone to waste with no action having been taken to up until the resident’s sit in yesterday at Irish water headquarters.

"This clearly shows a degree of administrative incompetence which needs to be urgently reviewed and corrected.

"However the best long term solution would be to return the control of water as a utility to local authorities.”
