Báidín McHugh diúltaithe ag Toraigh – Peadar Tóibín

8 March, 2018 - by Peadar Tóibín TD

Dúirt an Teachta Peadar Tóibín, urlabhraí Gaeilge Shinn Féin, gur gá don Aire Madigan bád farantóireachta nua a sholáthar do mhuintir Thoraigh láithreach bonn.

Ag labhairt dó inniu dúirt an Teachta Tóibín:

“D’admhaigh an Aire McHugh inniu le roinnt de mhná Thoraigh nach bhfuil cumhacht ar bith aige maidir le bád farantóireachta nua a chur ar fáil do mhuintir Thoraigh. Dúirt sé go raibh an cinneadh seo faoi chúram na Roinne.

“Ba é an tAire Joe McHugh a d’athraigh an seirbhís farantóireachta go Oileán Thoraigh gan dul i gcomhairle le muintir Thoraigh ar an gcéad dul síos. Bhíodh bád cúig mbliana is fiche acu a tógadh go speisialta dóibh. Anois tá bád dhá mbliana is daichead le teacht ina áit.

“Dúirt an Aire McHugh nach bhfuil an bealach go Thoraigh cosúil leis an bealach go haon oileáin eile de bharr na haimsire, na céanna agus an fharraige. In ainneoin sin, beidh muintir an Oileáin anois ag brath ar bhád breis is dhá scór bliain leis an turas naoi míle a bhaint amach.

“Tá muintir an Oileáin ag agóidíocht go treán leis an cinneadh seo a chúlú agus roinnt teaghlaigh a rá go dtréigfidh siad an Oileán mura dhéantar seo. Cé go bhfuil sé luaite sa Phlean Forbartha Náisiúnta go mbeidh bád farantóireachta nua ar fáil dóibh, ní luaitear cathain a thugtar dóibh é.

“An bhfuil an chinniúint céanna i ndán do mhuintir Thoraigh agus muintir na mBlascaod, Inis Airc agus na n-oileáin eile a thréigeadh an chéid seo chaite?

“De bharr go bhfuil an tAire McHugh ag séanadh freagrachta ó thaobh an seirbhís farantóireachta de, impím anois ar an Aire Madigan bád nua a chur ar fáil do mhuintir Thoraí roimh thús Mhí Aibreáin.”

Minister Madigan must provide a new ferry service to Tory Island – Peadar Tóibín TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson for Irish, Peadar Tóibín TD, has said that Minister Madigan must provide a new ferry for the people of Tory island immediately.

Speaking today Deputy Tóibín said:

“Minister McHugh today admitted to some of the women of Tory Island that he had no power as regards the provision of a new ferry for the people of the island. He said that this decision was the responsibility of the Department.

“It was the Minister Joe McHugh who changed the ferry service to Tory Island without consulting with the people to begin with. There was a 25 year old boat that was specially constructed for them. Now there is a 42 year old boat in its place.

“Minister McHugh said that the passage to Tory was unlike that of any other island because of the weather, the quays and the sea. Despite this, the people of the island will have to now rely upon a boat that is over forty years old with which to complete this journey.

“The people of Tory Island are protesting strongly to reverse this decision and there are some households who are saying that they will leave the island if this isn’t done.

"Even though it is mentioned in the National Development Plan that there will be a new ferry available for them, it does not mention when they will be given it.

“Does the same fate await the people of Tory Island and those of the Blasket Islands, Inishark and those other islands which were abandoned last century?

“As Minister McHugh is now denying responsibility  as regards the ferry service I am now asking Minister Madigan to provide a new boat for the people of Tory island before the start of April.”
