Ministerial Mismanagement of Galway Art House Cinema project ‘a disaster from beginning to end’ – Tóibín

12 July, 2018 - by Peadar Tóibín TD

The Public Accounts Committee yesterday published their first half of the year report. It details of their consideration of the Galway Art House Cinema project. It also details the report of the C&AG report into the fiasco.

The Cathaoirleach of the Oireachtas Committee on Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Peadar Tóibín has stated that “the report is a litany of poor ministerial management, mistakes and errors. The report makes it clear that decisions were made by Solas without required knowledge or consent of the Department.

“Decisions were made at nearly every level, including at Ministerial level, that necessitated the ploughing of millions of euro into a project that ended up being delayed by 8 years. After pouring €8.4m into the project, the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht have signed a deal that allows a private firm lease the cinema for 25 years for €1m.

“This project has been a costly travesty of mismanagement and yet no one is being held to account. No Minister will have to worry about any censure by the Taoiseach for the loss of taxpayers’ money. Without anyone being held to account, lessons will not be learned and a similar costly mess will revisit the state in the future.”
