Brexiteers playing with lives of older people - Milne

1 October, 2018 - by Ian Milne

Sinn Féin MLA Ian Milne has said the Tory/DUP Brexiteers are playing with the lives of older people through attempts to drag the north out of the EU.

Speaking on International Day of Older Persons, the party’s Older Persons spokesperson said:

“Today is International Day of Older Persons when we remember all contributions that older people make to society.

“Elderly people face challenges everyday. These challenges need more attention.

“We have an ever increasing age profile of society. Estimates for 2026 say there will be more people aged over 65 than under 16.

“It is vital that older people can play an active role in our communities.

“Older people face daily problems accessing care, much of this pressure is alleviated through millions of pounds of investment provided through EU funding projects.

“Greater cross border cooperation in health will lead to better healthcare for everyone on the island especially older people and those living in border communities.

“There is a real case that needs to be made on securing designated special status for the future of similar funding to assist our older citizens.

“The Tory/DUP Brexiteers are playing with the lives of our older people by attempting to drag the people of the north out of the EU.”
