SAVI II welcome and must begin without delay – Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Justice Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire has today said that work on SAVI II must begin without delay, and has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Justice this afternoon.
The Cork South-Central TD saidd;
“I welcome this afternoon’s announcement by Minister Flanagan that the CSO is to undertake the collection of data on the prevalence of sexual violence in the form of SAVI II.
“It has been 16 years since the last SAVI report was done, so to say that the data is outdated is an understatement, and makes it a poor basis for developing policy.
“Good quality, accurate up to date data is essential for forming an understanding it, the prevalence of sexual violence in our society, and to understand what actions or policies are need to address this.
“Violence against women and remains all too prevalent in Irish society. Fundamental to combating this abuse will be the completion of the SAVI II report providing updated research and data on sexual abuse and violence in Ireland.
“The Government are talking about this for a few years now, and although late in the day, today’s announcement is a sign of progress. That said there must not be any further delay in beginning this work.
“Sinn Féin wish to take this opportunity to commend those organisations that have long campaigned for SAVI II, and the ongoing work of organisations providing domestic, sexual and gender based violence supports and services to women and their children across the island of Ireland.”
