Still no action from Government on the Right to Housing- Eoin Ó Broin TD

10 December, 2018 - by Eoin Ó Broin TD

Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin TD has written to the chair of the Finance Committee requesting an update on the Eighth Report of the Convention on the Constitution, which included in its recommendations the right to housing. The report was referred to the Finance Committee on the 28th of September 2017.

Deputy Ó Broin said:

“The Eighth Report of the Convention on the Constitution which was on socio economic rights, including the right to housing was referred to, in our view wrongly, the Finance Committee for consideration well over a year ago.

“The report showed that over 80% of the members agreed that the right to housing should be enshrined in the Constitution.

“The report was referred to the Finance Committee despite a programme for government commitment stating that the report would be referred to the Housing committee.

“We opposed this at the time and sought to amend the motion and create a special joint committee to look specifically at Economic, Social and Cultural (ESC) Rights. Unfortunately the government has chosen instead to bury the report in the Finance committee.

“Sinn Féin and others have been calling for a referendum on the right to housing for a long time. We introduced a Bill on the issue that unfortunately was not supported by either the government or Fianna Fáil.

“The Right to Housing is also one of the key demands of the Raise the Roof activists, which included trade unions, the USI, political parties and NGOS.

“Therefore it comes as no surprise to me that the Amárach Research poll, conducted by the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission shows that 82% of people rising to 89% amongst 18-24-year olds believe that housing should be a human right.

“The poll further indicates that 63% of people and 78% of 18-24-year olds believe that a right to housing should be enshrined in the Constitution.

“I have written to the Chair of the Finance committee today to seek an update on the progress of this report. The issues raised and discussed by the Constitutional Convention are too important to be effectively dismissed by this government.”
