MP welcomes progress on main North West arterial route

14 September, 2007

Sinn Féin West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty has welcomed the North South Ministerial Council meeting chaired by Sinn Féin Regional Development Minster Conor Murphy that involved DUP Environment Minister Arlene Foster and the 26 County Transport Minister Noel Dempsey.

The Enniskillen meeting today was the first of a series of meetings where key decisions on transport planning and road safety will be taken. The next meeting will take place in the south in December and Conor Murphy will host the third meeting in Newry in March 2008.

Mr Doherty said:

"Sinn Fein have been at the forefront in the campaign for the upgrading of the main arterial route in the North West (N14, A5, N2). We took the campaign to Europe and brought it to the local councils.

"I am personally delighted that all the hard work of campaigners now appears to have paid dividend.

"Support for this project was secured at the North South Ministerial Council meeting in July.

"I am delighted to see that we now have agreement the next steps required to advance this project and an agreed management structure because progress on this is required to underpin the economic regeneration of the North West." ENDS
