Sinn Féin - On Your Side

All-Ireland approach to Road Safety must be a priority

14 September, 2007

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Road Safety, Newry Armagh MLA Cathal Boylan has welcomed today's meeting of the North South Ministerial Council chaired by Sinn Féin Regional Development Minster Conor Murphy that involved DUP Environment Minister Arlene Foster and the 26 County Transport Minister Noel Dempsey.

The issue of Road Safety and cross border community based rural transport was discussed at the meeting.

Mr Boylan said:

"Extensive research into issues associated with the carnage on our roads here in Ireland show clearly that the number of fatal and serious collisions in border counties is much higher than the in average non border counties.

"Louth, for example has recorded that 27.9% of drivers from the north were involved in fatal collisions in that County and it is significant that the early hours 2am to 4am in particular highlight the difference in fatal collisions between the border and non-border counties.

"Detection and legislation has a key part to play, but there is a need for more focused, informative and practical campaigns which will target all ages particularly the key group of young males.

"Not only do we need a joined up approach in tackling the deaths on our roads but we need greater targeted support for initiatives such border community based rural transport.

"Many deaths on our Roads are premature and preventable. That is the sad truth." ENDS
